A Fondant First

I had the day off and was super excited to make my Halloween "cake". Mostly I am just trying to learn how to use fondant and decorate cakes. My friend Cami gave me this great and super easy recipe for fondant:

2 envelopes knox gelatin
1/2 cup water
*bloom gelatin in water, melt then add:
3 T. melted Crisco
2 T. flavor
1 cup glucose
*Stir together well
4 lbs powdered sugar, Stir in at first, knead the rest in until its the right consistency

I learned a lot from each layer, the mummy layer was the easiest because it was okay for it to look a little sloppy because that's how mummy wrappings are. The second layer was the first time I covered a cake in fondant completely and I had some big wrinkles because I didn't have the cake on a stand. The third layer I learned that I needed to have the cake elevated so I could stretch the fondant smooth. Overall it was fun, it turned out a little sloppy but for my first cake that I made without any books or lessons, I am pretty happy. My cake book should arrive this week so hopefully my November cake looks a little cleaner!

I didn't use a real cake, my plan was to decorate Styrofoam, but Styrofoam was expensive, so I got the cardboard boxes and just frosted and decorated them, it works...

The monster mess during the process, my entire counter was covered with stickiness and cake clutter

It looks fantastic! I never really liked working with fondant, however, you've made it look a lot funner. And I'm sure it's fine that it's not on a cake, it's not like it tastes that great anyways.
